Château le Doyenné, Premieres Côtes de Bordeaux, 2016

The 2016 La Doyenne, a Première Côtes de Bordeaux, has an understated but pure bouquet with red cherries, boysenberry jam and violet aromas that unfurl nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, fine structure, subtle but slightly tarry fruit and a gently but insistent grip on the finish. This is a fantastic wine" Robert Parker 92 points.
Our take, this big robust Cabernet Franc based wine demands decanting, rich red meats and after that it will be a symphony.
Local archives carry a record of the existence of Château Le Doyenné as early as 1791. In the past, it was known as “one of the best crus of the commune”. It fell into disrepair after WW2 and was largely forgotten, the grapes sold on to the local Co-op… In 1994, Marie-Dominique et Jean Watrin, captivated by the charm of this hillside estate overlooking the Garonne, bought it and launched a complete restructuring of the vineyard and renovation of the winery.

For Rioja enthusiasts this robust red is a triumph. Made from a blend of 90% Tempranillo 90% and 10% Graciano 10% varieties which after vinification was aged for 24 months in American- and French-oak casks  which yielded a very accomplished offering.
