Port

Port is a fortified wine from Portugal, created by adding distilled grape spirit, usually brandy, to a wine base made from about 80 different grape varieties. This addition of high-alcohol spirit halts fermentation, thereby "fortifying" the wine.

Portis produced in Portugal's Douro Valley. Similar to how only sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France can be called Champagne, only wines from the Douro Valley can be labeled as Port.

The Douro Valley's soil is mainly composed of schist and granite. The region is divided into three zones that run from west to east along the river: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo, and Douro Superior. The western part of the valley has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and ample rainfall. However, moving inland toward the Douro Superior, the climate becomes increasingly dry and arid.

Port Wines:

Ruby Port: Young and vibrant, Ruby Port is known for its fruity and full-bodied character, with flavours of red berries and a touch of spice.
Tawny Port: Aged for extended periods in wood barrels, Tawny Port develops a mellow and nutty profile, with notes of dried fruits, toffee, and caramel.
Vintage Port: Considered the pinnacle of Port wines, Vintage Port is made from exceptional grapes in the best years, resulting in a powerful, complex, and age-worthy wine.
LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Port: LBV Port offers many characteristics of Vintage Port but is typically more accessible and ready to drink upon release.
White Port: Unlike its red counterparts, White Port is made from white grapes and can range from dry to sweet, often enjoyed as an aperitif or in cocktails.
