Understanding Grower Champagne: How Artisanal Vignerons Craft Unique Wines

Champagne is a sparkling wine produced exclusively in the Champagne region of France. To wear the name, it must follow strict appellation rules - from specific vineyard practices and designated grape sourcing to precise pressing methods and secondary fermentation in the bottle (Méthode Champenoise).

While Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay make up the vast majority of Champagne, small amounts of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris (Fromenteau), Arbane, and Petit Meslier are also grown and vinified.

The region is split between roughly 100 large Champagne Houses (Maisons or Grandes Marques) and around 19,000 smaller vine-growing producers, known as growers. Together, they farm about 32,000 hectares of vineyards.

While the famous Houses buy grapes from all over the region to blend into a consistent "house style," Grower Champagne is made by single, small estates using their own grapes. The focus here is on expressing terroir - the specific soil and climate of a single vineyard or village.

Reading the Label Codes

Every bottle of Champagne has an official abbreviation printed on the label that shows how it was produced:

RM(Récoltant-Manipulant): Grower Champagne. A producer who makes wine from their own grapes (a maximum of 5% purchased grapes is permitted).

NM (Négociant-Manipulant): Companies that buy grapes from various growers to make their wine. This includes most major commercial brands.

CM (Coopérative de Manipulation): A cooperative that pools grapes from member growers to make wine.

SR (Société de Récoltants): An association of growers who share winemaking facilities to make a joint Champagne without being a full co-op.

RC (Récoltant-Coopérateur): A co-op member who sells wine made by the cooperative under their own family label.

ND (Négociant-Distributeur): A wine merchant selling finished bottles under their own name.

MA (Marque d'Acheteur): A private label brand owned by someone other than the producer, such as a supermarket or restaurant.

Grower Champagne at Whelehans Wines

Because Grower Champagnes are made in small batches, they can be difficult to track down. At Whelehans Wines, we exclusively import Champagne from the Bénard-Pitois family, fourth-generation growers based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, just outside Épernay. Michelle, Laurent, and Louis Bénard have managed their family estate since 1991, continuing long-standing traditions to create single-estate wines.

The family has been crafting Champagne since 1878, with a commitment to quality and tradition passed down through generations. Their estate spans 9.5 hectares across six villages in the Great Marne Valley and the Côte des Blancs. These vineyards, classified as both Grand Cru and Premier Cru, benefit from the unique terroir of these prestigious regions. The hands-on approach of Michelle and Laurent ensures the highest quality, with a true reflection of their land in every bottle.

Pairing Food 

Because Bénard-Pitois come from specific Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, they have a lot more character and structure than basic party bubbles - making them great with food. The crisp acidity and stony minerality go naturally with fresh seafood like oysters, seared scallops, or crab. For fuller-bodied or vintage Champagnes, they hold up really well to roast chicken, creamy cheeses like Brie or Chaource, and even foie gras.
