Montepulciano d'Abruzzo: A Distinguished Italian Red

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a celebrated Italian red wine, crafted from the Montepulciano grape in the Abruzzo region of central-eastern Italy. It’s crucial not to confuse this wine with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a Tuscan wine made from Sangiovese and other grapes. Known for its deep, complex black fruit flavours and distinctive smoky-sweet finish, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo has become a favourite among wine enthusiasts.

The DOC region for Montepulciano d'Abruzzo covers a broad area within Abruzzo, stretching from the foothills of the Apennines to the Adriatic coast. Abruzzo is one of Italy’s most mountainous regions, with over 65% of its terrain classified as mountainous, reaching elevations up to 2,750 meters (9,000 feet). The northern hillside vineyards, planted on calcareous clay, benefit from generous sunlight and dry breezes from the Adriatic Sea, ideal conditions for growing this grape.

According to Italian wine regulations, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC wines must consist of at least 85% Montepulciano grapes, with up to 15% Sangiovese allowed. The wine must be aged for a minimum of five months before release, while those labeled "Riserva" require at least two years of aging, including nine months in wood barrels. The alcohol content must be no less than 12%, or 12.5% for Riserva.

Wine experts like Oz Clarke describe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo as a deeply colored wine with notes of pepper and spice. Its "rustic" character softens when paired with food, making it a versatile companion at the table. Meanwhile, Master of Wine Mary Ewing-Mulligan highlights its aromatic profile, tannic structure, and low acidity, while Joe Bastianich emphasizes its earthy aromas, rich black fruit flavours, and deep, inky-purple hue.

At Whelehans Wines, we are proud to exclusively import three exceptional Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wines from Il Feuduccio, each offering a unique expression of this renowned varietal.

One of these standouts is the Feuduccio Fonte Venna Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, 2021. This wine boasts an intense ruby color, with a bouquet of spicy red fruits complemented by vibrant acidity. On the palate, it offers a structured and persistent finish, making it an excellent choice for pairing with hearty, savory dishes such as beef brisket, Bolognese (meat or vegetarian), or tagliatelle with ragu.

For those looking for a more mature expression, the Feuduccio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, 2019 offers rich history and depth of flavor. Produced by the Il Feuduccio di Santa Maria d’Orni estate, located in the heart of the Annunziata Territorial Park, this wine reflects the passion and expertise of the Lamaletto family. The grapes, hand-packed into small crates, undergo a meticulous fermentation process in steel vats, followed by aging in oak barrels for 12 months. The result is a wine with notes of cherry and plum, accented by earthy spice and a touch of tannin, perfect for pairing with robust dishes like beef ragu or rich vegetarian stews.
