    STORY BEHIND THE WINE

Aszú wines are rare masterpieces produced only in exceptional vintages, when climate, soil, and grape varieties align to allow botrytis cinerea (noble rot) to thrive. Each shriveled, flavour-concentrated berry is meticulously hand-harvested at peak maturity, resulting in a world-class wine where luscious natural sweetness is seamlessly balanced by vibrant, terroir-driven acidity. Historically, a puttony was a wooden basket holding roughly 25 kg of hand-picked, noble-rot-affected (botrytis) Aszú grapes. Winemakers would add these baskets into a standard barrel (gönci barrel, ~136 liters) of dry base wine.

At the forefront of this noble tradition is Royal Tokaji, a historic estate in northeastern Hungary dedicated to reviving the region's legendary heritage. Founded in 1990 - with vineyards dating back centuries - Royal Tokaji played a pivotal role in restoring Tokaj to the global fine wine stage post-communism. By pairing time-honored techniques with modern expertise, the winery produces single-vineyard expressions that showcase the profound complexity and unique mineral identity of Tokaj's finest terroirs.
