Modern, clean and generously oaked Rioja Alta

"A complex and very well-structured Rioja full of minty dark berries, blue fruit, chocolate, cedar, graphite, peppercorns and spices. The tight and full-bodied palate shows excellent concentration framed by complete, fine-grained tannins. Long and very youthful."
    James Suckling

The wine reveals a dense, deep ruby red colour that beautifully reflects the concentration of its high-altitude, old-vine heritage. The nose unveils a highly complex bouquet of ripe black fruits, plum, and black pepper, complemented by refined hints of spice bread, tobacco, dark chocolate, and cedar from beautifully integrated oak. On the palate, it is remarkably generous and elegant, showing off a silky texture wrapped in fine, delicate tannins that carry the fruit through to an exceptionally long finish. Perfectly balanced between structure and freshness, this is a sophisticated red with excellent ageing potential.

    STORY BEHIND THE WINE

The legacy of Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz is rooted in the historic Finca la Emperatriz estate in Rioja Alta, which belonged to Empress Eugénie de Montijo in the 19th century. Acquired in 1996 by brothers Eduardo and Víctor Hernáiz, the 101-hectare family estate includes 32 hectares of certified Viñedo Singular vines. For the excellent 2019 vintage, the brothers sourced fruit exclusively from their oldest plots, perched on a 570-metre plateau. Here, 50- to 65-year-old vines grow in unique white pebbles, benefiting from flawless natural drainage and a cool continental climate that yields grapes of exceptional finesse.

To preserve this terroir, the hand-harvested grapes were co-fermented in concrete tanks with native yeasts before a 20-day maceration. The wine was then aged for 14 months, utilising 60% new French oak and 40% second-use American oak barrels. This meticulous winemaking approach has produced a deeply complex and elegant Viñedo Singular Tinto that beautifully balances the historic nobility of the estate with a refined structure built for long-term ageing.
