Tawny Ports

Tawny Port is a type of fortified wine that ages longer in wooden casks, particularly smaller barrels, allowing slow oxidation that greatly influences its appearance, aromas, and flavours.

Basic Tawny Port

Basic Tawnyhas a slightly transparent body with aromas of dried cherry, toasted nuts, and a hint of leather. It offers a light creaminess on the palate and finishes with a touch of cocoa powder.

10-Year-Old Tawny Port

10-Year-Old Tawny Port is a blend of wines averaging ten years. This version has aromas of burnt orange peel and nutty toastiness. On the palate, it opens up with honeyed fruits and nuts, featuring a silky texture and a long finish. While it shares characteristics with basic Tawny, it offers a more complex experience from the first sip.

20-Year-Old Tawny Port 

20-Year-Old Tawny Port is a blend of wines averaging twenty years. This Tawny appears paler and more transparent, like faded copper with an orange-red glow. The aromas are subtler and include pressed flowers, dried figs, mandarin orange peel, and beef jerky. The palate is smooth and surprisingly robust, with a firm mid-palate grip and a long praline finish, followed by a lingering caramel aftertaste.

40-Year-Old Tawny Port

At forty years, the wine gains a timeless quality. A 40-year-old Tawny Port is a blend of wines averaging forty years, with some younger and some older components. The aromas include burnished leather, tangerine peel, and caramel. It has a soft, almost syrupy creaminess on the palate, revealing flavors of licorice, dried porcini, bay leaf, and a balanced sweetness with a hint of black pepper.

Tawny Ports are often considered dessert wines and pair well with chocolate truffles or with some hazelnut-flavoured chocolate. However, they also complement perfectly creamy blue cheese like Gorgonzola and hand-sliced Jamón Ibérico.

Tawny Ports are already aged and bottled by the producer. You can usually find the bottling year on the back label, so it doesn't need any more aging!
