Discover Napa Valley Wines by Whelehans Wines

Discover the Bold Elegance of Napa Valley Wines

When people talk about world-class wine regions, Napa Valley always comes up - and rightly so. This small slice of Northern California has earned its place on the map with wines that are bold, elegant, and packed with character. At Whelehans Wines, we’re delighted to bring a taste of Napa to Ireland with a carefully curated selection, including exclusive wines from two outstanding producers: Ramey Wine Cellars and Frog’s Leap Winery.

    A Region with Real Range

Napa Valley isn’t just one type of wine or one type of vineyard. It’s home to 16 sub-appellations (AVAs), each with its own personality. From the fog-cooled hills of Carneros to the sun-soaked slopes of Rutherford, Napa’s diversity is what makes its wines so exciting.

Here are a few key AVAs worth knowing:

Rutherford: Known for its deep, earthy Cabernet Sauvignons. This is where Frog’s Leap has made its home, farming organically and letting the land speak through the wine. Climate there is moderately warm, still marginally influenced by early morning fog. Western bench area is cooler, with less late afternoon sun, tempered by afternoon marine winds. (This AVA averages a bit warmer than Oakville and Stags Leap District). Usual summer peak temperatures are around 34-35.5°C with a large diurnal range.

    1. Elevation: 47 to 152 m
    2. Rainfall: Up to 96 cm annually
    3. Soils: Western benchland is sedimentary, gravelly-sandy and alluvial, with good water retention and moderate fertility. The eastern side has more volcanic soils, moderately deep and more fertile.
    4. Principal varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Franc

Oakville:It produces big, structured Cabernets with serious ageing potential. Some of Napa’s most famous wines come from here. East side of the AVA receives warmer afternoon sun.

    1. Elevation: 40 to 305 m
    2. Rainfall: Up to 890 mm annually
    3. Soils: Primarily sedimentary gravelly alluvial loams on the western side, with more volcanic but heavier soils on the eastern side. Low to moderate fertility and fairly deep, with average water retention.
    4. Principal varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Franc

Los Carneros : On the cooler, southern edge of the valley, Los Carneros is perfect for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, thanks to the breeze from San Pablo Bay. High temperatures during summer rarely exceed 27°C with less diurnal range variation.

    1. Elevation: Sea level to 213 m
    2. Rainfall: Lowest in Napa Valley: up to 610 mm annually
    3. Soils: Clay dominated, very shallow in general, with more loam and hillside alluvials in the northern section. Yields typically are restrained by the hard claypan subsoil, which prevents deep-rooting.
    4. Principal varieties: Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir

Stags Leap District: Moderately warm with afternoon marine winds acting as an "air-conditioner" to cool the warmer air radiating off the bare rocks of Stags Leap itself and the surrounding hillsides. Mid-summer temperatures can reach 38°C, but more regularly are in mid-35°C range. Stags Leap District was made famous by the 1976 Paris Tasting that helped put Napa on the world stage!

    1. Elevation: Sea level to 122m
    2. Rainfall: Up to 760 mm annually
    3. Soils: Volcanic gravel-loams on the floor of the valley, with rocky hillsides, and low to moderate fertility due to hard clay subsoils.
    4. Principal varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc

Howell Moutain:Located above the fog line on the eastern side of the valley, the AVA is warmer and drier than other AVAs with more hours of sunshine and little-to-no marine influence.

    1. Elevation: 427 to 792 m
    2. Rainfall: Up to 127 cm
    3. Soils: Predominantly volcanic, shallow and infertile. Drainage is high, fertility low.
    4. Principal varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Viognier

    Did You Know?

Before managing the shop, David Whelehan spent two summers in the heart of Napa Valley, working the harvest at Sequoia Grove Winery. Back in 1985 and ’86, he rolled up his sleeves under the guidance of winemaker Jim Allen - cleaning tanks, sulphuring barrels, and brushing floors. While he wasn’t allowed near the actual grape picking (“the pros were far too fast!”), the experience left him with a deep respect for Napa wines  - and more than a few stories from the cellar!

    What Makes Napa Tick

The secret to Napa’s success? Its climate. Warm, sunny days followed by cool nights help grapes ripen fully while keeping their acidity. That’s what gives Napa wines their signature richness and balance.

Add to that a patchwork of soils, elevations, and exposure, and you’ve got one of the most expressive wine regions anywhere in the world.

Two Producers We’re Proud to Work With

At Whelehans Wines, we’re excited to be the exclusive Irish importer for Ramey Wine Cellars and Frog’s Leap Winery - two names that represent very different, but equally brilliant, sides of Napa winemaking.

    Ramey Wine Cellars

David Ramey is one of California’s most respected winemakers. He helped shape modern Napa and Sonoma winemaking, combining old-school European techniques with New World fruit. Ramey’s wines are powerful yet refined - built to last, but a joy to drink now!

    Look out for:

    Frog’s Leap Winery

If you like your wine with a bit of soul and a strong sense of place, Frog’s Leap is a name to know. Founded in the early 80s, this Rutherford winery farms organically, dry-farms their vineyards (no irrigation), and focuses on making food-friendly wines that are full of energy and freshness.

    The Legend Wines

Some wines go beyond taste - they’ve made history. Our Napa Valley selection includes true icons: the elegant Château Montelena Chardonnay that helped put California on the map, the powerful Joseph Phelps Insignia 2018, a benchmark for Napa blends, and the legendary Opus One, a collaboration that redefined luxury in American wine. These are bottles with stories, stature, and serious pedigree.

    Château Montelena Chardonnay, 2021

A vibrant wine bursting with green apple, white peach, and zesty citrus, softened by floral hints of chamomile and honeysuckle.
The palate is lively and textured, layered with minerality, lemon curd, and crème brûlée.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards Insignia, 2018 by Whelehans Wine

    Joseph Phelps Insignia 2018

The 2018 Insignia opens with beautifully perfumed floral, dark fruit, anise and cigar box aromatics. A wine of depth, elegance and finesse, the palate is fresh and focused with creamy texture and layers of blackberry, mocha and black cherry. The seamless tannin structure and balance culminate in an uplifting, lengthy finish.

    Opus One, 2018

    Opus One, 2018

The Opus One 2018 offers profuse aromas of blackberry, cassis and black cherry. Elegant notes of violets, white pepper and rose petals follow and together they deliver a very seductive bouquet. The seamlessly layered flavours’ build to a crescendo of fresh and juicy black-fruit, accented with hints of orange zest, liquorice and dark chocolate. Beautifully balanced, the smooth round tannins and fresh acidity combine to create a soft, creamy mouthfeel and extend the flavours into a long persistent finish.
