Most wine commentators would see Pinot Noir as the grape of the Holy Grail. It needs a very particular terroir to produce truly exciting wines. With historic references back to the middle 1300’s, it is a relatively thin skinned grape variety. Classically wines made from it don’t have deep colour extraction and typically have soft tannins and high acidity and red fruit aromas and flavours. It has a good affinity with oak and can make very long lasting wines.
In France, in 2009 there were 72,595 acres planted, this country’s 7th most planted red grape variety. Interestingly, there is more Pinot Noir grown in Champagne than in Burgundy, the home of this grape variety and where its most famous expressions come from. Germany is becoming an increasingly important grower of this varietal where it is known as Spätburgunder
