Barolos signature high acidity and assertive tannins are beautifully balanced with ample, ripe fruit. Aromatics of violets, potpourri, roses and flavours of red cherries and plums, raspberries, roasted herbs, leather, tar and earthy spices. Medium to full bodied with a long finish. Decant for at least 1 hour before drinking.
Food Pairing: It’s common for locals in Piemonte to pair a Barolo with gamey birds such as guineafowl, partridge, wild duck or quail. Braised beef or offal will also work but be careful not to overwhelm with rich sauces.
Cellaring: 2022-2038
STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
If you don’t know the name Aldo Conterno then you can’t claim to know Barolo. Since its foundation in 1961, his estate has repeatedly set the benchmark for the grace and power we come to expect from Barolo today. But it wasn’t always this way. Tradition plays a huge party in the winemaking techniques of this region, that is until Aldo came along. Breaking with old methods of the past, he set about modernising the techniques, focusing on better fruit and shorter maceration with a view to making Barolos more approachable in their youth. This was an estate that at one time had the capacity for 200,000 bottles but instead they choose to reduce this to 80,000 as a mark of their commitment to quality rather than profit. Aldo’s 3 sons, Franco, Stefano and Giacomo now continue in their late father’s footsteps with incredible results. 2015 was an excellent vintage in Piemonte and this expression reflects that beautifully.
