Nicola Catena, left Italy for Argentina in 1898. In 1902, he planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza, although a blending grape in Bordeaux, Nicola suspected it would flourish in the high altitude Argentine Andes. It was a hunch that would not fully flower till nearly a century later. Today Catena is one of the super-stars of Argentinian wine. Their holdings of extensive plots of old vines are the envy of many in the world of wine. The range of fine wines are both wonderful expressions of their terroir and truly World-Class in their own right.
The polished and developed 2017 Catena Alta Malbec has balsamic aromas and a very attractive mixture of flowers, berries and spices. It has contained ripeness for a warm vintage, with a serious profile, medium body and fine-grained tannins, with good grip. It was fermented with full clusters and matured in used French oak barrels for some 18 months. I like the austerity and grip on the palate. 93/100 Points Luis Gutierrez The Wine Advocate.
Aged in New French Oak for 18 Months.
