Superb, mineral & polished Douro Tinto
Deep ruby in colour. On the nose, intense and elegant aromas of fresh red and black fruits are married with spicy notes of pepper and cinnamon and hints of balsamic. On the palate, smooth and polished tannins create a velvety mouth feel, and a bright acidity carries the intense flavours onto the long and elegant finish.
Blend of 18% Old Vine Field Blend, 18% Tinta Amarela, 15% Touriga Femea, 14% Tinta Francisca, 12% Tinto Cão, 10% Touriga Nacional, 9% Touriga Franca, 2% Bastardo, 2% Marufo Tinto
Aged in 225-litre French oak barrel, in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for around 18 months
pH: 3.5
Wine Advocate | 95 Pts
Cellaring: Drink now to 2031
Food Pairing: Perfect with slow-roasted lamb with rosemary, grilled Wagyu beef, or a traditional Portuguese duck rice with smoky chorizo provide the necessary fat and savory intensity to balance the deep dark fruit and schist minerality of the wine. Also really good with wild mushroom risotto or aged hard cheeses like Manchego and Queijo da Serr | 🌡️ Serve at a temperature around 16°C and 18°C
STORY BEHIND THE LABEL
Meaning "hidden varieties," Castas Escondidas highlights the Douro Valley’s more obscure grapes, including Tinta Francisca, Marufo, Touriga Fêmea, and Bastardo - the local name for the Jura’s Trousseau. Winemaker Luís Sourced these grapes from a mix of estate-owned sites and long-term partner growers across the Douro Superior and Cima Corgo sub-regions. To add depth and complexity, the final blend incorporates a high percentage of fruit from ancient, low-yielding field-blend vineyards.
Casa Ferreirinha represents the pinnacle of Portuguese winemaking, rooted in the 19th-century work of the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. Affectionately known by locals as "Ferreirinha," she was a visionary who not only expanded the estate's terraced vineyards but also transformed the Douro region by investing in schools and hospitals for her community. This legacy of excellence continues today under the stewardship of the Sogrape Vinhos family, who maintain the estate’s deep connection to the land and its people.
The estate benefits from the rugged schist soils and mountain-protected climate of the UNESCO-listed Douro Valley, a terroir that produces wines with unmatched aging potential. By combining this exceptional environment with centuries of know-how, Casa Ferreirinha remains defined by a deep respect for its heritage.
