The Isole e Olena Chianti Classico is a gorgeous, racy wine laced with bright red cherries, flowers and herbs, all of which comes together in the refined, medium-bodied style that is the house signature. It is vibrant, perfumed and impeccable in its overall balance. Lovely aromas of plum, redcurrant, sweet spices and violet. Sweet, lush and round, with a slightly high-toned quality that adds appeal to the red fruit flavours.

STORY BEHIND THIS WINE

Paolo de Marchi and his wife Marta run the family estate in the heart of Chianti. Paolo comes from a family with three generations of experience winemaking in Piedmont. Isole e Olena has 49 hectares of vines, the oldest of which were planted in 1958. Paolo was one of the first producers to plant new lower yielding clones of Sangiovese, which produce better grapes and therefore better wines.

Whelehans has done an amazing job of sourcing a mid-sized Champagne producer making phenomenal wine that rivals most of the big name houses. The reserve is particularly good value and I have bought it in three formats; half bottles as an aperitif, bottles for celebrating being alive , and magnums as well-received dinner gifts
