Aromatically the wine has notes of star anise, dried rose petals, along with jammy blackberries and cherries and pencil lead. On the palate the wine borders full-bodied, with a cocoa driven flavor, well-integrated tannins, and a long finish.
"Made from grapes throughout the appellation, the majority from St. Helena, it blends in small amounts of Merlot (8%), Petit Verdot (6%), Malbec (2%) and Cab Franc (2%). Turned earth, pungent tobacco leaf and currant define its savory, substantially structured elegance that offers room to age".
-Wine Enthusiast
This bottling of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with varying amounts of Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, comes from carefully selected locations throughout the Napa Valley AVA: Napa Valley, St. Helena, Oak Knoll, Napa-Carneros, Mt.Veeder, Calistoga, and Rutherford. By using grapes from all over the celebrated AVA the bottling's terroir is influenced by silt, clay, and gravel deposits of the Napa River flood plain.
David and Carla Ramey founded the winery in 1996 and forged a new California winemaking style that paired old-world techniques with the premier fruit of Sonoma and Napa. The Ramey family has long excelled at collaborating with other multigenerational winegrowers to make single vineyard wines as well as blends that showcase the defining characteristics of their sites. The second generation, Claire and Alan Ramey, began working at the winery in 2013 and have been cross-trained in all aspects of winery operations. In 2021, Claire and Alan became co-presidents of Ramey Wine Cellars. The vision is unwavering: to make classic wines from Sonoma and Napa that belong amongst the world’s best.
