    STORY BEHIND THIS WINE

The Türk winery is located west of Vienna in the idyllic wine village of Stratzing in Kremstal. The roots of the renowned family business go back to the beginning of the 18th century. They own 17ha of quality vineyards, several of which are erste lage or premier cru with about 75% planted with Grüner Veltliner.

Winemaker Franz Türk’s philosophy is to draw on centuries of accumulated family knowledge but also to try something new. His focus is on producing wines with character and finesse, that reflect their terroir, built for the long term, not a sprint or to have flashy fruitiness in youth. The often internationally awarded sweet wines are a special insider tip. Read more.

    OUR IMPRESSION

The Thurnerburg vineyard is classified as a erste lage or premier cru and not surprisingly as it’s barren and rocky with mostly course gravel and quartz boulders. The Grüner Veltliner vines here, planted in 1985, reflect this terroir with a distinctive chalky or minerality character on the palate adding weight and length to its typical varietal character of grapefruit with light white pepper.

2019 was a very successful vintage in Austria with wines typified by good ripeness but also a degree of acidity bringing freshness, elegance and finesse. Winemaking is with natural yeasts and no sulphur is used until just before bottling and the wines are only moved by gravity, never pumped.

    Awards

2017 vintage scored 95pts with Wine Enthusiast Magazine: The fragrance of crushed citrus leaves creates a heady opening on the nose before ripe pear and lemon balm follow. The palate presents a picture of concentrated zestiness with edges of white pepper, salty preserved lemon and arugula, all wrapped in pear-fruited richness. Zest also characterizes the finish of this wine, which carries its full-flavored richness lightly.  Anne Krebiehl MW.
