Antigo, meaning rose-gold, refers to the red, clay rich soils found on the North-eastern slopes of the Estate. Compared to the Table Mountain sandstone and Granite on our other Cabernet vineyards, the grapes from the Antigo block produce wines with more plush, elegant fruit aromatics. The clay and coolness of the site also reduces stress and therefore creates tannins which are softer, sweeter, and more integrated. The blend is driven by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot adding complexity and depth.
Food Pairing: Grilled and roast lamb with garlic and rosemary. Roast beef, veal and venison. Steak pies.
Cellaring: Drinks very well now to 2026.
STORY BEHIND THE WINERY
The estate has been operating since 1998 and is proudly owned by the Ord family. The name Waterford is a combination of the Ord surname as well as the waterfalls from the mountains that surround the estate (WATERF + ORD). The idea was given by the oldest daughter, Ashleigh Ord.
Waterford Estate can be found in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley situated within the world-renowned Stellenbosch region in South Africa.
