1 x PEÑAFIEL ALBA DE MIROS RUEDA VERDEJO, 2021

One of the mysteries of the wine world is why we don’t see more Verdejo. Of habitual good quality, it is equally good as a food wine or on its own. Production is mainly centred around the region of Rueda where it is native. This is a region characterised by extreme weather ranges and high altitude vineyards. Although a relatively young winery (formed in 2003), the vineyards at Bodegas Peñafiel are located at 900m, close to being some of the highest in Europe. This gives them a leg-up in crafting terroir-driven wines of great distinction and quality.

Radiant in straw-yellow with fresh fruit aromatics of lemon, grapefruit and pomelo. On a tropical palate you get flavours of mango and pineapple. With the lees ageing adding a velvety texture as well as some light hazelnut and brioche notes. Shows great dimension on a well-rounded and lengthy finish.

1 x DOMAINE GUERRIN & FILS SAINT-VÉRAN LE CLOS VESSAT, 2020

The Guerrin’s estate dates from 1926 and can be found at the heart of the protected natural site between the Roche de Solutré and the Roche de Vergisson in southern Burgundy, just to the west of Mâcon. Today the fourth generation works a patchwork of 35 small vineyards spread over 15 hectares and various soil types. Respecting nature and farming sustainably with 90% of work done manually and fermenting with native yeasts are key to highlighting their excellent terroir.

The vineyard for this wine is clay and limestone based and south facing and it ripens early giving rich flavours which are captured by controlled fermentation in stainless steel before ageing for nine months on lees, which adds body and a creamy texture to the attractive peach and pear fruit with a touch of hazelnut and a clean citrus finish.

1 x DOMAINE DELAPORTE SANCERRE SILEX BLANC, 2021

A 17th Century family owned Domaine that is causing a real stir in Sancerre with Matthieu Delaporte at the helm. In Matthieu’s own words “precision, balance and complexity are the watchwords of our cuvées with each delivering a strong sense of their individual terroirs, marked by considerable minerality, power and freshness”. This is the most perfect summation of their complex, intriguing and delicious wines.

A joyous multidimensional expression of Sauvignon Blanc from exceptional silex terroir. It has captivating notes of white flowers with subtle citrus references. The palate is wonderfully textured and round on the palate with layers of subtle and enticing yellow fruits flavours. Memorable.

1 x QUINTA DOS AVIDAGOS RESERVA BRANCO, 2019

Portugal is currently centre-stage in the wine world for new and interesting white blends of quality. Few other regions can match the dedication winemakers here show towards the abundance of native grapes at their disposal. The long history of Port production in the Douro means that the art of blending reaches new heights here.

Lemon-yellow in colour with the scent of white flowers, stone fruit and cut grass. On the palate you get yellow apple, peaches and pears. With a light touch of oak, it’s full and creamily textured adding warm toast and vanilla notes. Beautifully balanced out with a saline, persistent finish.

1 x TÜRK KREMSER THURNERBERG GRÜNER VELTLINER, 2019

The Türk winery is located west of Vienna in the idyllic wine village of Stratzing in Kremstal. The roots of the renowned family business go back to the beginning of the 18th century. They own 17ha of quality vineyards, several of which are erste lage or premier cru with about 75% planted with Grüner Veltliner.

The Thurnerburg vineyard is classified as a erste lage or premier cru and not surprisingly as it’s barren and rocky with mostly course gravel and quartz boulders. The Grüner Veltliner vines here, planted in 1985, reflect this terroir with a distinctive chalky or minerality character on the palate adding weight and length to its typical varietal character of grapefruit with light white pepper.

2019 was a very successful vintage in Austria with wines typified by good ripeness but also a degree of acidity bringing freshness, elegance and finesse. Winemaking is with natural yeasts and no sulphur is used until just before bottling and the wines are only moved by gravity, never pumped.

1 x CARUSO & MININI GRILLO NATURALMENTE BIO, 2021

While winemaking in Sicily goes back to ancient times, its only in the last 25-30 years that it has really come into its own and expressed the unique identity of the Island on the world stage. Some of Italy’s finest wines now come from here, reflecting the distinct climate and terroir here. One producer elevating the profile of the region’s wine culture is Caruso & Minini. With a broad range of the island’s indigenous grape varieties in their portfolio and a string of international awards, they deserve to be taken seriously.

For those unfamiliar with the grillo grape, it sits somewhere between Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc. This expression has light lemon, apple, herb and citrus blossom aromas. Delicate flavours on the palate of grapefruit, peaches, acacia as well as some oak and nutty flavours from maturation. This is a young , fresh wine with mouth-watering acidity and is made for drinking now.

"A stunning white wine from Sicily made exclusively from organically-grown grapes. It's fresh, citrus scented with a touch of ripe peach. Back home it would be drunk with grilled octopus. Another good reason to get down to Whelehan's at the old Silver Tassie in Loughlistown."

Tom Doorley, Irish Daily Mail, 28th May 2022
