STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
Francesco Valentino Dibenedetto inherited his L’Archetipo vineyard in Puglia from his wine-making father Carlo. A university-trained agronomist Francesco Valentina believed that his land needed to be refreshed and so from the 1980s he converted to organic farming. But he was still unhappy with the vitality of the soil and so, in 2000, turned to biodynamic farming. The results were better but still short of what he desired. Finally, inspired by the thinking of Japanese natural farming philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka he, along with his wife and four grown-up children, implemented the practices involved in synergistic agriculture. These include: Do not work the soil. No ploughing or hoeing. The soil shouldn’t be disturbed. Do not fertilize. The soil is fertilised by a permanent organic cover and the roots of plants. Do not use chemical pests or fertilizers. Do not compact the soil. This allows the micro-ecosystems found in the soil to be sufficiently aerated.
Dibenedetto’s own philosophy is equally earthy: ‘As regards agriculture we can’t do it without taking care and respecting all living beings in ecosystem. Have you ever thought about what happens when somebody ploughs land? It is like a massive bulldozer that destroys your home! How could your life go on? How could you grow up your children without a house? Every living being has its own home!’ L’Archetipo belongs to the Triple A movement in Italy which has as its motto Agricoltori, Artigiani, e Artisti. Created in 2001 by leading Italian wine figure Luca Gargano, the idea stemmed from his belief that most wines were overly standardised, lacking the distinctive character of terroir and producer.
Ruby red colour; fruity nose (black cherry and plum), with final cloves aroma. Medium body, smooth and balanced, quite tannic, fine and elegant. An authentic Negroamaro!
