STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
A highly regarded family run domaine centred in Santenay run by Jean-Marc and Anne-Marie Vincent whose careful work in the vineyards and cellar is aimed at making long lasting wines that evolve slowly. They farm a patchwork of small plots organically that were inherited from Jean-Marc’s grandfather and only one of them, the Auxey-Duress stretches to more than two barrels. Planting densities can be as high as an extraordinary 14,000 vines per hectare and work like trimming is done by hand rather than by tractor.
Fermented in new oak barrels, about 10% new.
The grapes for this wine come from a 40-year-old vineyard plot of just 0.25ha. 2019 was a warm vintage yet remarkably brought equal levels or ripe fruit and refreshing acidity to the delight of growers. Puligny whites are typically quite firm, steelier than some neighbouring villages and this is a classy, classic example. It’s not short of stone fruit aromas or satisfying texture but there’s an underlying almost saline minerality which gives great length.
