STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
The historic Piedmont Francesco Rinaldi & Figli estate dates back over 150 years to 1870 and sprightly nonagenarian Luciana Rinaldi has been at the helm since 1941, aided today by his nieces Paola and Piera. Not surprisingly they are staunch traditionalists in the Barolo and Barbaresco style debate. They allow their Nebbiolo grapes a long maceration before ageing in large Slovenian oak botti, eschewing the trendy use of small French oak barriques. A rare gem in Piedmont from a vineyard planted in 1975 and 1977 that many might have ripped out and planted with Nebbiolo as it’s close to the Cannubi Cru sub-region with compact sandy soils lying on south west facing slopes overlooking the hill of La Morra. Dolcetto is regarded as an easy drinking, bottled early unoaked red with succulent juicy plum and berry fruit that some think of as Italy’s answer to Beaujolais, but the Roussot vineyard’s excellent terroir gives it an extra dimension with floral rose like notes and a graphite like mineral quality.
