STORY BEHIND THIS WINE

The historic Piedmont Francesco Rinaldi & Figli estate dates back over 150 years to 1870 and sprightly nonagenarian Luciana Rinaldi has been at the helm since 1941, aided today by his nieces Paola and Piera. Not surprisingly they are staunch traditionalists in the Barolo and Barbaresco style debate. They allow their Nebbiolo grapes a long maceration before ageing in large Slovenian oak botti, eschewing the trendy use of small French oak barriques. The resulting wines are archetypal examples with great fruit purity, complex aromas, firm tannins and huge ageing potential.

OUR IMPRESSION

Barolo producers need to produce reds that can be enjoyed young while their top wines are maturing and that tends to be Barbera and Dolcetto. Inevitably the vineyards are at the fringes of their finest spots, such as here where the vines grow on the flatter parts of the famous Cannubl hill cru and also in the renowned La Morra commune.

This was fermented in cement and stainless steel tanks before ageing for just a year in medium sized Slavonian botti and the resulting wine has plenty of berry fruit, moderate tannin and an archetypal sour cherry acidity that makes a fabulous foil for so many foods.
