STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
Fans of Californian wines will be very familiar with Turley Wine Cellars. For nearly three decades, Turley Zinfandels have been legendary, some of the state’s most sought-after wines. The early renditions in the 1990s were known for scoring 100 points from Robert Parker and then selling out within minutes of release.
Owner Larry Turley wasn’t the winemaker though, no, the man who made the wines for 18 years helping to establish their stella reputation, was Ehren Jordan. Eventually, in 2013, Turley and Jordan parted ways amicably and he went off to do his own thing, working initially with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at Failla, a winery he had established with his wine in 1998, to great effect. The lure of Zinfandel was strong though and from the 2015 vintage on he started working with the variety again under a label taken from his wife’s maiden name, Day. The results are of course exceptional and also a fraction of the cost of those Turley wine. Read more.
Ehren Jordan takes a hands-on approach in the vineyards, working organically with old vines and a hands-off approach in the winery using native wild yeasts and a willingness to experiment with cement egg shaped vats and amphora.
In his own words he likes to work with Zinfandel through the lens of Pinot Noir. What that means in practice is gently working the grape skins when extracting colour and flavours with lots of whole bunches and crushing by foot in small vats, sparing use of sulphur and subtle unobtrusive use of oak ageing, via larger barrels and a limited percentage of new ones. The aim is to capture beautiful aromatics and allow the wine to express its unique terroir. The Somoma Coast Zinfandel is a blend of vineyards spanning the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek and Alexander Valley.

92pts Jeb Dunnuck, former Californian wine critic at Wine Advocate.
“From the team at Failla, the 2017 Zinfandel looks to be one heck of a base appellation blend, offering loads of plums, black raspberries, spice, and classic cedar notes. This medium to full-bodied, rounded, charming barrel sample is going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet keep for a decade..” – Jeb Dunnuck
