STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
Christian Voeux is one of the most renowned winemakers in the Southern Rhone Valley having spent 24 as cellar master at prestigious Château Mont-Redon in Châteauneuf du Pape and a further eight years as general maanger at another great estate, Château La Nerthe.
He retired to his family estate Domaine de l’Amauve in Séguret which he inherited from his parents and continuous to make wine with his wife Monique and son Nicolas. The estate is certified organic and comprises a patchwork of 11ha spread over 25 plots. Soils are diverse across so many vineyards but include limestone, gravel, clay and marl.
The origin of the name of the property comes from the mallow flower, which are present in great number around the vineyard during spring and which give off discrete floral flavours.
The wines are certified organic so the use of sulphur is limited and fermentation is by naturally occurring yeasts. Red wines are not fined and some cuvées are unfiltered.
A blend of Grenache Blanc 42%, Clairette 28%, Viognier 18%, Ugni-Blanc 12% that is harvested manually, then 95% is fermented in small tanks at controlled temperatures with 5% fermented in barrel to add an extra dimension. Ageing is for seven months on lees before bottling.
A very attractive nose with apricot, pear and white flowers with medium bodied with a lightly creamy texture and a crisp finish.
"Christian Voeux and his family have built a stellar reputation for their southern Rhone wines. This Côtes du Rhône Villages white blend — Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc and Viognier — has aromas of apricot and pear. Refreshing palate with great purity. Citrus and white stone fruit notes. Enjoy with: Lemon chicken." Matthew Nugent, The Sun, 14th August 2021
89 Points Decanter: "Gently zesty element to the juicy fruits. Full-bodied, fairly fresh. The acidity feels quite pointed, but this has serious concentration of flavour, and length of flavour. Good intensity and sappy fruitiness. HVE certified, hand harvested grapes. Drinking Window 2021 - 2023" June 2021
