Dry, age-worthy red from historic estate in left-bank Bordeaux

Both rich and focused on the palate, this wine exudes fresh floral and cassis fruit flavours with a wet stone-type minerality. Complex notes of blackberry, black plums, tobacco and lilac linger on a taut yet smooth finish. If you are used to more traditional St Estephe’s then prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

Wines from the St Estephe appellation can sometimes be overshadowed by its more illustrious neighbour Pauillac but at their best they are the equal of almost any Bordeaux. Historically reputed for having one of the finest terroirs in Saint-Estèphe, Chateau Tronquoy Lalande takes its name fittingly from the family that owned the chateau in its formative years. Today the estate is run by the Bouygues family, in 2006 they invested 10 million Euro in renovation after the purchase. This is a fortune when you consider the estate is a Cru Bourgeois and that the wines do not sell for that much money. Such investment represents a serious commitment to quality and a reflection of faith in the Chateau’s potential Winemakers in this region utilise a higher portion of Merlot in their wines and this gives them a distinctive style that is both approachable in youth as well as having good aging potential. This Grand Vin from the Chateau Tronquay estate is no exception.
The wine is a blend of 55% Merlot (For Softness), 37% Cabernet Sauvignon (Structure), 6% Petit Verdot (Colour and Floral Aromas), and 2% Cabernet Franc (Red Fruit Flavours). All of these blend harmoniously to give this wine more finesse, more gentle texture, and purity of fruit relative to many of their peers.
