STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
This family-owned estate lies on a limestone plateau in the village of Juillac near Castillon la Bataille. Born into a family which had rented the property for 3 generations, Pierre Ciroli purchased it in 2000. Pierre Ciroli does all the viticultural and winemaking work on the estate, shouldered by his two sons who will be taking up the reins of the business after him. The greatest possible attention is paid to the vines and no effort is spared to ensure that tradition is respected in this vineyard of human dimensions.
The 35 ha estate is on south facing slope and the vines are an average of 25 years old and planted with has 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are mechanically harvested prior to a traditional fermentation in steel and concrete vats which is to say they are pumped over regularly to extract colour and flavours. There is no oak ageing. 2016 was an excellent vintage in Bordeaux and it would have been a struggle to make anything less than very good wine so buy with confidence. It was warm so this has plenty of ripe dark plum and cherry fruit along with a little earthy spice. A few years age has softened the tannins and added a leathery note.
