It was his grandson, Hugh, who transitioned the family into land ownership, though his path was nearly derailed by the French Revolution, which saw him imprisoned and his property confiscated. Following his release, Hugh directed the family business from England, eventually acquiring Château Langoa in 1821 and a portion of the Léoville estate in 1826, the latter of which became Léoville Barton. This estate achieved Second Growth status in the 1855 Classification, and the Bartons maintain the rare distinction of being one of just three families to have held continuous ownership of their property since that historic ranking was established.

Browse our Saint-Julien Collection

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0353/6859/9683/files/chateau-leoville-barton-2016-whelehans-wines-dublin-winestore.jpg?v=1774543725
