Chateau du Farques is an exceptionally historic estate that dates back to 1302. Incredibly it has been in the Lur Saluces family since 1472, which is the same family that owned of iconic Sauternes estate Ch. d’Yquem from the late 18th century until the early 21st century. The actual chateaux, because of its history, is largely a medieval fortress.

Despite this connection it wasn’t until 1935 that white Bordeaux grapes were planted and the first sweet wine made in 1943. The historic estate totals about 170ha but only about 18ha are dedicated to vines, 80% of which are Semillon and 20% are Sauvignon Blanc.

As at Ch. d’Yquem there are many passes through the vines to pick only perfectly ripe berries and ones affected by noble rot. As the grapes are so dehydrated yields are tiny about 7-8hl/ha per hectare, by comparison a dry white would be 50-60hl/ha. Fermentation takes place in barrel and is aged for 30-36 months in 100% new oak barrels.

2016 is an excellent vintage and shows a basket of lush ripe fruits including pineapple, candied orange, grapefruit and honey with nut and vanilla supported by enough acidity to keep it fresh and cleanse the palate.
