Produced from old vines, yet fresher than more traditional Malbecs, this Lunlunta has black and red berry aromatics in abundance (think blackberry, blueberry, red & black cherries). Oak influences of vanilla, dark chocolate, tobacco and smoke are all there with an earthy kick. Rich and intense, the tannins are velvety while the finish is silky-smooth.
Food Pairing: You probably don’t need another Malbec & Steak pairing recommendation so why not try this with a smokey oven-cooked Aubergine/Eggplant dish. A medium hot lamb curry like rogan josh or a flavour-full terrine will also work delightfully.
Cellaring: Now to 2025
STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
Try keeping up with the Catenas and you will quickly be out of breath. Their range of wines, projects and influence is staggering. Director Dr Laura Catena, is a force of nature in her own right and is one of the most recognisable and influential experts in all of South America.
Their Bodega Catena Zapata winery in Luján de Cuyo, with its striking Mayan-influenced pyramid shape has a case for being one of the most distinctive wineries not just in Argentina, but worldwide.
One reason for this producers prominence is that they have mastered the art of high-altitude viticulture. Argentina has some of the highest vineyards in the world and this LunLunta Malbec was produced on sites up to 1450m above sea-level. 2019 was a good vintage here, producing highly concentrated wines with great colour and refreshing acidity. All these factors combine to provide you with some high-quality drinking at a great value price.
