STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
Brothers Josep and Joan were the seventh generation to run the Joan d’Anguera estate in Montsant in Catalonia when they inherited from their father in 2000. At first, they carried on in the same vein but from 2008 radically reimagined their project. They started farming biodynamically, top-grafted traditional varieties, Grenache and Carignan on to existing syrah and cabernet vines and removed trellising and trained vines to a lower gobelet shape. Changes in the winery included a minimum intervention regime with whole bunch fermentation, old oak and minimal sulphur use. Read more.
This cuvée has evolved to reflect the new minimalist style at Joan d’Anguera. Once a blend of Garnatxa (Garnacha or Grenache), Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in new wood, Finca l’Argata is now pure Garnatxa sourced from sandy clay and limestone soils from head-pruned vines ranging in age from 40-60 years old. It is fermented whole cluster in concrete and aged well-seasoned French oak barrels.
Elegant, ripe and perfumed with complex vegetal aromas. Medium-bodied wine with a solid structure, freshness and concentration, light but ripe and rustic. Flavours of mint, blueberry, pepper and spice, with ripe tannins and balancing acidity.
94pts Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, April 2018, “a superb Mediterranean Garnacha, a true revelation”
