STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
Brothers Josep and Joan were the seventh generation to run the Joan d’Anguera estate in Montsant in Catalonia when they inherited from their father in 2000. At first, they carried on in the same vein but from 2008 radically reimagined their project. They started farming biodynamically, top-grafted traditional varieties, Grenache and Carignan on to existing syrah and cabernet vines and removed trellising and trained vines to a lower gobelet shape. A blend of 90% Carignan (Carinyena) and 10% Syrah, grown biodynamically, manually harvested, then fermented with indigenous yeasts with 70% whole bunches in concrete vats before aging for 14 months in old barriques without fining or filtration and just a touch or sulphur prior to bottling. The result is an elegant wine with light herbal aromas, bramble fruits, a sprinkle of pepper and a more-ish mineral and succulent palate. A versatile wine that works well with roast pork or chicken, bean and legume based vegetarian dishes.
