STORY BEHIND THIS WINE

Latour-Giraud is an historic Cotes de Beaune domaine dating back to the late 17th century, although the current configuration dates 1958 when the Latour family merged with the Giraud estate. Much of their focus is based on Meursault, where they have about 10ha. The estate is famed as the most important producer, with 2ha, in Meursault’s most prestigious premier cru, Genevrières. They have several other parcels in Meursault too as well as Puligny-Montrachet. OUR IMPRESSION

The red wines of Volnay are renowned for their elegance and delicacy, but this varies with the vines’ position on the slopes by the village. Those at the bottom have heavier soils and make less complex wines. Midway up and higher, where the premier crus begin the soils are less fertile, there’s more limestone, but the wines are finer and more interesting. Latour-Giraud have about a quarter hectare on the of the higher part of the slopes in a plot with limestone and clay. This mixture provides a micro-terroir that gives wines with a beguiling mix of pretty pinot noir perfumes like cherry and violet underpinned by subtle spicy oak, a medium bodied palate with enough, but not intrusive tannin and very good length.
