    Stunning South African Bordeaux Blend

A ‘Bordeaux blend’ of Cabernet Sauvignon (76%), Cabernet Franc (17%) and Merlot (7%), this very fine example of the Kanonkop Paul Sauer reveals a precise and pristine nose of blackcurrant and dark chocolate with hints of cherry and creamy vanilla courtesy of 24 months in French oak barrels. Measured and full, with fruit and oak in harmony enlivened by a streak of acidity and a finish that lingers long.

    • 98/100pts Tim Atkin

Food Pairing: This would go well with all roasts, particularly beef and lamb.

Cellaring: Drinking now with food but will improve over the next 10-15 years.

    STORY BEHIND THIS WINE

Kanonkop Estate is located on the low slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, between Stellenbosch and Paarl. It is famous for being one of the first producers to grow and vinify Pinotage, South Africas signature grape. The estate also makes red wines from the classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Kanonkop Paul Sauer is one such wine.

The Estate range, including the Paul Sauer, is made solely from older vineyards. The wine is named after the man who established Kanonkop. Paul Sauer was an early figurehead of the South African wine industry. He was also a politician who served as a minister during the apartheid era. He died in 1976. The Kadette range is made from fruit sourced from contract growers in the Stellenbosch region.
