Medium to full bodied with a plush mouthfeel and a lengthy, dry finish this wine is drinking really well right now. The French new oak aging gives this plenty of structure as well as vanilla, cinnamon and liquorice spices on the palate. Well-balanced and layered with sweet black fruits including blackcurrant, mulberry, plums and bramble all in abundance. Touches of Tobacco and cedar round this wine off beautifully.
Cellaring: Wine will age a further 10 years after vintage
Food Pairing: Soft cheese, fish pâté, Bouillabaisse or flavoured fish will all work splendidly with this vintage, as well as chicken or sushi dishes.
STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
The Simonsig wine estate in historic Stellenbosch is a powerhouse on the South African wine scene. While the estate has a wide-range of wines in its portfolio, it was Pinotage that was the first red wine it released.
Run by brothers Johan and Francois Malan, their late father Frans founded the estate back in 1964. As a reflection of the estate’s pedigree, Frans is credited with producing South Africas first sparkling Méthode Cap Classique in the style of Champagne, in 1971.
The Pinotage grape itself is typically very reflective of its terroir. The unique and diverse soil structure of the estate (a mixture of sandstone, shale and granite) coupled with a cool maritime climate produces this singularly powerful expression from the home of Pinotage
