STORY BEHIND THIS WINE
A highly regarded family run domaine centred in Santenay run by Jean-Marc and Anne-Marie Vincent whose careful work in the vineyards and cellar is aimed at making long lasting wines that evolve slowly. They farm a patchwork of small plots organically that were inherited from Jean-Marc’s grandfather and only one of them, the Auxey-Duress stretches to more than two barrels. Planting densities can be as high as an extraordinary 14,000 vines per hectare and work like trimming is done by hand rather than by tractor.
Ageing is in new barrels with about 25% new and there is no racking or sulphur addition until bottling. Read more.
The vines for this are 50-60 years old on a plot of 1.23ha. The 2019 vintage was a warm and dry yet remarkably brought equal levels or ripe fruit and refreshing acidity to the delight of growers. Santenay has a reputation for wines that can be little slightly rustic compared to illustrious neighbours to the north. As ever though the Vincents over deliver with a darker wine with great purity of berry and cherry and floral finesse added to a light spicy liquorice note.
